State Control

Nearly all of Syria’s radio and television outlets are state owned, and the Ba'ath Party controls nearly all newspapers. The authorities operate several intelligence agenciesamong them Shu'bat al-Mukhabarat al-'Askariyya, employing a large number of operatives.

The Emergency Law, effectively suspending most constitutional protections, was in effect from 1963 until 21 April 2011. It was justified by the government in the light of the continuing war with Israel over the Golan Heights.
